Who operates Reststop
Reststop.com.au is an Australian road-trip facility directory operated by George Lambroglou, a sole trader based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (ABN 36 947 646 716). In this policy, “Reststop”, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to that website and its operator.
Reststop does not require visitors to create an account to search for public toilets, rest areas and other travel facilities.
Information we collect
Depending on how you use the website, we may collect:
- Technical information: IP address, browser and device type, operating system, requested pages, referring page, timestamps and security or diagnostic information generated when the website is delivered.
- Analytics information: page views, general traffic sources, interactions, device category and broad geographic information produced by Google Analytics. We do not intentionally send names, email addresses, form messages or precise facility-search coordinates to Google Analytics.
- Location information: precise coordinates supplied by your browser only when you actively choose “Use my location”.
- Messages and corrections: your email address, an optional name, the facility or page involved, and the information you include in a contact, correction or location-suggestion message.
- Advertising and consent information: cookies, identifiers, consent choices and advertising interactions if advertising services are enabled.
Please do not send medical, financial, identity-document or other sensitive personal information through Reststop forms.
How we use information
We use information only where reasonably necessary to:
- provide search results, maps and facility information;
- respond to enquiries and investigate corrections or location suggestions;
- measure how the website is used and improve search, content and usability;
- operate, secure, diagnose and protect the website;
- detect spam, abuse, fraud or technical failures;
- serve, measure and protect advertising if Google AdSense is enabled; and
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our website terms.
We do not sell personal information supplied through Reststop forms.
Location searches
Your browser asks for location permission only after you choose “Use my location”. If permission is granted, the coordinates are used to find nearby facilities and may be included in the current search request to Reststop’s server.
Reststop does not intentionally retain your precise location as a visitor profile, does not attach it to contact-form messages, and does not send precise search coordinates to Google Analytics. You can refuse location permission and search by town, postcode, road or facility name instead.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files or identifiers stored or accessed through your browser. Similar technologies include local storage, tags, pixels and web beacons.
The public facility directory does not require an account. However, hosting and security services, consent tools, Google Analytics and Google AdSense may use cookies or similar technologies for website operation, measurement, fraud prevention, advertising and remembering privacy choices.
You can control cookies through your browser. Where Google’s consent controls are displayed, you can accept, refuse or manage the available purposes. The “Privacy and cookie settings” control in the footer opens Google’s consent settings when they apply; otherwise it returns you to this policy.
Google Analytics
Reststop uses Google Analytics when it is enabled in the production website to understand traffic and improve the service. Google Analytics may collect information such as pages viewed, interaction events, approximate location, browser and device information, referral source and cookie or device identifiers. Reststop excludes URL query strings from its Analytics page-view events so precise search coordinates and free-text search values are not sent as page locations. Google states that IP addresses collected by Google Analytics are not logged or stored in Analytics in their original form.
Google tags may load when a page opens. Reststop uses Google Consent Mode v2 so storage and personalisation behaviour can respond to regional requirements and the visitor’s choices. In the EEA, United Kingdom and Switzerland, Analytics and advertising consent signals default to denied while Google’s consent system obtains a decision. When consent is denied, Google tags may send limited cookieless signals rather than writing advertising or Analytics cookies.
Reststop intends to retain Google Analytics user-level and event-level data for 14 months. Aggregated reports may remain available after event-level retention periods expire. Google Signals, advertising personalisation and remarketing remain disabled unless they are deliberately enabled and may be used only where our settings, Google’s requirements and the visitor’s applicable privacy choices permit them.
Learn more in the Google Privacy Policy and Google’s explanation of how it uses information from partner sites.
Google AdSense and advertising
Reststop may use Google AdSense to fund the free website. Advertising remains disabled until the site is approved and the required configuration is completed. When advertising is enabled, third-party vendors, including Google, may place and read cookies, web beacons, IP addresses or other identifiers to serve, measure, personalise and protect advertising.
Google and its partners may use advertising cookies to show ads based on a visitor’s prior visits to Reststop or other websites. Other authorised advertising vendors may also participate where enabled through Google’s advertising services. Visitors can manage personalised Google advertising through Google Ads Settings.
Reststop uses Google’s Privacy & Messaging tools for consent and privacy choices where required once the relevant message is published in AdSense. Advertising storage, advertising user data and advertising personalisation are controlled by Consent Mode signals and Google’s regional requirements. Advertising placements stay disabled until AdSense approval, consent configuration and final site testing are complete.
Contact and correction forms
When you use a Reststop form, an email address is required so we can confirm receipt or ask for clarification. Providing your name is optional. Form messages are delivered through Resend to the Reststop contact inbox. An automatic receipt is normally sent to the email address you provide.
Reststop will not intentionally maintain a separate website database copy of form submissions. Resend and the receiving email provider may process message metadata, email addresses and message content to deliver the emails. Do not include sensitive personal information or attachments.
Submissions are reviewed before any public facility information is changed. A submission does not guarantee that the requested change will be published.
Maps and external services
Reststop uses OpenFreeMap to display its interactive map. Map requests can disclose technical request information to OpenFreeMap. OpenFreeMap states that it does not use cookies or tracking technologies and does not store IP addresses in regular server logs, although temporary IP logging may be enabled during security incidents. See the OpenFreeMap Privacy Policy.
Directions links open Google Maps. When you follow a directions link, you leave Reststop and Google’s terms and privacy practices apply. Council pages, source records and other external websites are also governed by their own policies.
Service providers and overseas processing
Reststop uses the following service providers:
- Vercel: website hosting, delivery, security and operational infrastructure;
- Google: Analytics, AdSense, consent tools and external Google Maps directions;
- Resend: delivery of contact, correction and acknowledgement emails; and
- OpenFreeMap: interactive map style and tile delivery.
These providers may process information in the United States and other countries where they or their subprocessors operate. Privacy protections in those countries may differ from Australian law. Vercel identifies the United States as its primary processing location, and Resend states that data may be transferred to and processed in the United States.
We may also disclose information where required by law, to respond to a lawful request, to protect the website or its users, or during a legitimate transfer of the website or business subject to appropriate safeguards.
How long information is retained
- Contact and correction messages: retained while the matter is being handled and deleted from the Reststop inbox within 90 days after resolution, unless longer retention is reasonably required for legal, security or dispute purposes.
- Google Analytics: user-level and event-level data is configured for a 14-month retention period. Google may retain aggregated reports separately.
- Precise location searches: not intentionally stored as a lasting visitor profile by Reststop.
- Hosting and security records: retained according to the operational, security and legal schedules of Reststop and its infrastructure providers.
Backups, security records or provider systems may take additional time to cycle out deleted information.
Security
Reststop uses reasonable technical and organisational measures intended to protect information, including HTTPS, restricted administrative access, protected environment variables, spam controls and established infrastructure providers. No internet or email system is completely secure, so absolute security cannot be guaranteed.
Access, correction and privacy complaints
You may ask what personal information Reststop holds about you, request correction or deletion, withdraw a consent where applicable, or make a privacy complaint. We may need enough information to verify your identity and locate the relevant records.
We aim to acknowledge privacy requests within five business days and complete them within 30 days where reasonably practicable. We will explain if additional time is required or if a request cannot be completed.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Children
Reststop is a general travel-information service and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. A parent or guardian who believes a child has submitted personal information can contact us to request its deletion.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when Reststop’s services, providers or legal obligations change. The current version will be published on this page with a revised update date. Material changes to analytics, forms or advertising should be reflected here before the changed feature is enabled.
